“In 2003 the Canadian Government held a series of meetings in Ottawa.  The Senate was preparing a Senate Standing Committee Report On Urban Aboriginal Youth.  I presented my program to the suits up in Ottawa.  My program, Leadership Through The Arts – Your Voice, Your Story, was picked as one of the TOP 10 BEST PRACTICE MODELS and details in the report commended the program for its unique take on LEADERSHIP, EMPOWERMENT and NATION BUILDING.  I knew it was a good program, it was worth all the struggle it took to make people believe that the Arts empowers.  Being picked as a BEST PRACTICE MODEL though let me know just how important my work is – it’s an honour to work with our young people.”

Ryan is engaged on a grassroots level (never forget where you came from) in artistic training of youth, he mentors youth in cultural practice and he’s managed to meld the two of those things together to TRULY EMPOWER AND ENGAGE YOUTH IN COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP.  He calls his program, “LIFE SKILLS ON STEROIDS.”

LEADERSHIP THROUGH THE ARTS

  • Improv Boot Camp (youth theatre camp)
  • Leadership Through the Arts (youth leadership through arts practice)

  • Stand Up and Say Something (interactive, full day youth arts workshop)

Ryan’s commitment to youth is unwavering.  Growing up as a “friendship centre baby” has taught Ryan that community is the most integral part of giving youth a chance to succeed.  Ryan is engaged with the Youth Movement sweeping Indian Country in many different capacities, focusing on many different functions, and he takes as much joy from teaching/sharing with youth than he does from being onstage.
