The Things My Kookum Taught Me: Patience

Posted on 23rd February, by Ryan McMahon in FEATURED POSTS. 1 Comment

In my comedy and moreover, in my life, I always think to myself, “What would Kookum (grandma) think?”  It’s a bit of a weird thing.  It’s not something I did when she was with us on earth – but now that she’s playing “Bingo in the Sky” I’m always checking in with that thought.

The other day I pulled out my beadwork and it’s always an emotional thing for me since she passed.  My gramma was well known for her beadwork, moccassins, and other leather works and it’s one of the things she really wanted to pass down to me – working with my hands.  She spoke of the danger of losing the skills, the stories, the iconography (she didn’t use the word iconography, think she just said, “stuff”) that she grew up with and when I …

National Day of Action – Are You A Warrior?

Posted on 27th May, by Ryan McMahon in FEATURED POSTS, NEWS. 4 Comments

i was recently dropping in on a few message boards around indian country and i stumbled upon a lengthy internet, message board, thread fight that argued what the ‘modern day warrior’ was, and wasn’t. and interesting question to say the least.

the national day of action is coming upon us on may 29, 2008, and most of the talk/fight on the message board that i came across involved what “the day of action is for, and what it’s about.” an interesting question, seeing that one of the chiefs that led the uprising in 2007 called off his rail blockade just before the day of action (some say because ottawa announced that roseau river, his community, had just won their land claim and dude got what he wanted). alot of debate circled around warrior societies, clan systems, …
